On this day 37 years ago, New York Knicks legend Willis Reed retired from the NBA after 10 seasons. The Captain played every game in his career with the Knicks and he helped the franchise win two NBA titles, one in 1970 and the other in 1973.

Reed was named the Finals MVP in both championship seasons, and he worked alongside Walt Frazier to bring the Knicks to basketball immortality. Perhaps the most memorable moment is Knicks history occurred in the 1970 NBA Finals when Willis Reed made an emotional return from an injury to galvanize the fans and his teammates.

In this ten season NBA career, Reed averaged 18.7 points per game, 1.8 assists per game and 12.9 rebounds per game. He will always be remembered by Knicks fans, and is considered by many the best center in franchise history.
