Amar’e Stoudemire Stresses Importance of Education to Harlem Kids

After completing his first season as a member of the New York Knicks, Amar’e Stoudemire has certainly seen his popularity increase around the league from the added exposure of playing in the Big Apple.

Stoudemire has noticed this added celebrity, and is using his position as a role model to teach young children about the importance of staying in school and gaining an education.

The Knicks forward was in Harlem on Wednesday speaking at the Polo Grounds Community Center, which is across the street from Rucker Park on 155th street. He spoke to a group of youngsters and used the phrase ‘step up’ repeatedly, which is the Department of Youth program’s mantra.

Stoudemire went on to explain his tattoos, which he said were all ‘inspirational.’ One of his most recent tattoos he received about a year and a half ago, and it simply says ‘read.’ He went on to tell the children that if he wasn’t a professional basketball player he would be a school teacher.

“I took school seriously,” said Stoudemire. Let’s hope this is one message the students take seriously as well.
