After a long meeting today in New York City between the NBA owners and Players Union, news has come out that the owners have decided to lockout their players starting midnight. This will be the first work stoppage in the NBA since 1998-1999, but this current lockout threatens the entire upcoming season.
The work stoppage was no surprise, and fans were expecting a lockout for a long time. Although both sides agreed to met in the next two weeks, they are far apart on most of the major issues.
There are many issues that will need to be straightened out before fans are able to see the best athletes get back on the court. Owners believe they need a system that would bring them more revenue, while players want to earn the same amount of money they've been getting the past several seasons.
Some say Game 6 of the 2011 Finals was the last NBA game of 2011, and that fans will be missing NBA action for several months. At this point, it seems as though the NBA will get back into business in 2012, but if talks do not go well the league may cancel the 2011-12 season entirely.
