J.R. Smith Claims Lin’s Offer Would Cause Jealousy
Not many times do teammates envy each other for their contracts, and most players understand their role and value. In order for a team to win a championship, everyone must be on the same page or else nothing can be accomplished in June. The New York Knicks are one of 29 teams trying to take the throne from the Miami Heat and they need everything to go according to plan in order for that to happen.
J.R. Smith is another piece the Knicks hope will help them win a title, but he does come with risks both on and off the court. Smith has a tendency to find trouble outside the arena and he can be inconsistent on the court. During the offseason, Smith can make the press happy with his headline comments, and although his latest one has the Knicks shaking their head, he could in fact be right.
Smith said some of his teammates would be jealous if the Knicks matched Lin’s offer sheet. Lin earned nearly $30 million off a short stretch of success and it could have created turbulence in the locker-room.
Asked if teammates could be jealous, Smith said, “Without a doubt. I think some guys take it personal, because they’ve been doing it longer and haven’t received any reward for it yet. I think it’s a tough subject to touch on for a lot of guys.”
Even though smart, veteran players would never publicly express anger with the contract, there is no doubt there would have been a sense of discontent.
