J.R. Smith Declines Player Option; Becomes Free-Agent

Written by on June 25, 2012 in News - No comments

New York Knicks guard J.R. Smith has decided to decline his $2.4 million player option, meaning he will become a free-agent starting July 1.

Although Smith said he would like to remain in New York, he will test free-agency and possibly get a much more lucrative contract from another team. Smith could get as much as $12.2 million for a four year contract or re-sign with the Knicks with early Bird rights and earn at least $5.3 million in 2013-14.

Smith was a great asset for the Knicks coming off the bench after his return from China. Although his future with the team is uncertain, he can surely help the Knicks get better in the 2012-13 season.
