The Knicks had a slow start to the game and the players were settling for too many perimeter jumpers. They were not attacking the paint, whereas the Clippers were finding success near the basket. Randy Foye and Blake Griffin had a nice starts for the Clippers and their nine points helped the team go up 12-9 with 6:17 left in the first quarter.
New York did get out of its shooting slump as the quarter progressed and Carmelo Anthony found his groove. The Knicks also began to attack the basket and that led to a lot of success on that end of the court. After 12 minutes of play, the Knicks held a 24-19 lead behind nine points by Anthony.
The Knicks had a very nice start to the second quarter and their second unit players shot the ball extremely well. Landry Fields and Steve Novak gave the Knicks great scoring and helped the team eventually go on a 14-2 run. With 8:40 to play in the first half, the Knicks held a 36-23 lead thanks to the reserves.
The Clippers did bring the deficit down to one point, but the Knicks answered right back and ended the first half on an 8-0 run. Carmelo Anthony took over the scoring load for the Knicks and used his strength to score and dish it out to his teammates. After 24 minutes of play, the Knicks were up 48-39 behind 13 from Anthony.
Los Angeles used Randy Foye to spark its third quarter run and he single handedly brought the team back into the game. Foye was shooting the ball extremely well from the perimeter and the Knicks had trouble staying in from of him. Los Angeles was on the verge of taking the lead, but the Knicks once again answered the run.
Heading into the final period, the Knicks held a 74-66 lead. Anthony had 17 points for the Knicks at the time while Foye led the Clippers with 23.
In the fourth quarter, the Knicks kept a cushion from the Clippers and never let them take over the lead. With the continued hot shooting from Smith and Novak, the Knicks put away the Clippers. Los Angeles did make a major run in the latter portion of the period and threatened the Knicks. Los Angeles used a 14-1 run to get itself back into the game and at several points made it a one possession game.
The game came down to the final minute and the Knicks relied on Smith to close out the Clippers. As the final buzzer rang, the Knicks walked away with a 99-93 win.
