Iman Shumpert has been a pleasant surprise for Knicks fans this season, but his quick transition into the starting role, particularity the point-guard position has been a rough one. His shooting percentage from the field is a terrible 37% and 25% from beyond the arc. If any other shooting guard were putting up those numbers they would almost automatically be regulated to the bench, but Shumpert's intangibles, specifically his defense keeps him on the court for majority of the game. Shump' has not been oblivous to his his ealry shooting struggles, he addressed them yesterday before the Knicks blow-out loss to the OKC Thunder.
Shumpert got ripped heavily on TNT’s national broadcast Thursday night for his lousy game in Memphis – 3 of 15 in the first half, 5 of 20 overall with 6 turnovers.
“I think anyone who saw the game knows I messed up the other night,’’ Shumpert said. “I acknowleged it, my coaches acknowledged it.’’
Regarding the rantings of Reggie Miller and Charles Barkley, Shumpert said, “I didn’t hear it. I played a bad game. Criticism will come. That’s fine. Everybody gets criticized. I’m not a guy whose going to shy away from it. If you criticize me, you criticize me. I got another game tonight.’’
“They just suckered me out of my game,’’ Shumpert added. “I’m really tough on myself. I get really critical of myself.’’“I’m going to continue to be more aggressive,’’ Shumpert said. “I’m going to pick my spots a lot better tonight.’’
Mike D’Antoni loves the attitude and it’s clear Shumpert takes coaching well. “He’s the first one to recognize he’s messed up,’’ D’Antoni said today.
