The Knicks top the Celtics in the NBA season opener 106-104, Carmelo Anthony lead all scorers with 37, and 17 in the 4th quarter.
The Celtics were without the "New York Silencer" in the loss, Paul Pierce has been nursing a bruised bone in his right leg throughout the pre-season. With Pierce down, the "C's" found other ways to pick up the scoring, Rajon Rondo led the team with 31 points and 13 assists.
The first half of this game was controlled almost totally by the Knicks, the half-time score was 52-62 Knicks, but the game was much further away then the score indicated. The 3rd was owned by the Celtics, outscoring the Knicks 35-17 and they went into the 4th up by 8. 'Melo missed most of the 3rd quarter due to foul trouble which lead the Knicks offense to sputter and the Celtics to control the game's momentum. Watching his team from the bench lose the lead they built up in the first half must have really struck a nerve with 'Melo because he came out in the 4th with a vengeance. The forward put on a scoring clinic, putting up 17 in the quarter. The two biggest plays of the 4th was a 3 point shot by Melo to tie the game with 3:25 left and a pump fake split the double jumper late to keep the game close.
The rematch on February 2nd in Boston will surely be another nail-biter.
