Melo Alone Cannot Trump the Celtics

Watching a single player take over a game offensively may be amusing to witness, but those performances rarely result in a victory. Elite players can carry their squads on their shoulders, but they often times fail to close games. Carmelo Anthony has had prolific scoring outing a myriad of times, and his latest one occurred Tuesday night at the TD Garden in Boston.

During Game 2 of his first round series versus the Celtics, Carmelo Anthony awed the spectators with his amazing offensive skill-set. Anthony was able to dissect Boston’s defense and was knocking down shots from nearly every position on the court. The Knicks were without Chauncey Billups for the entire game, and All-Star Amar’e Stoudemire left the court after suffering from back spams in the second quarter.

The stage was set for Carmelo to shine under the national spotlight and steal a game against the Knicks’ divisional rival. Knicks fans had waited for a superstar for seven seasons; they wanted a player who would bring the team to glory and carry them to basketball immortality.

In his Game 2 masterpiece, Anthony scored 42 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in what Charles Barkley called the greatest playoff performance he had ever seen. However, the Knicks walked off with a loss and found themselves in a 0-2 hole. Anthony did not get much help from his teammates, and when he passed the ball to Jared Jeffries, Jeffries turned the ball over.

It is very tough to single handedly beat an upper echelon team like the Boston Celtics, and they Knicks need to provide Carmelo with back-up.  Anthony said yesterday, “We have to have guys who have to step up as well on the team.”

Tonight’s Game 3 at Madison Square Garden is a must-win for the Knicks; New York can either bring the series to 2-1, or face a daunting 0-3 hole. Carmelo will show up for his squad tonight, but the rest of the team must rise to the occasion also.
