The Knicks began their training camp a short while ago and with their first pre-season game fast approaching, it is clear that Wallace is still not in basketball shape. Wallace has been absent from the NBA for two years and it will take some time for him to get into the optimal condition.
Knicks coach Mike Woodson told the New York Post that the staff is working with Wallace and it is trying to get him prepared for the upcoming season.
“He’s not ready yet,’’ said Woodson, who hasn’t guaranteed Wallace a roster spot. “It’s conditioning. He’s just not there where you want him to be. He’ll get there eventually. We’re doing things to get him in shape. It’s not always running up and down the floor to get in shape. Other things you can do as well.”
The Knicks are the oldest team in the NBA and although their nucleus is fairly young, they will not be running the fast-break often. New York has a roster full of veteran players and at these stages of their careers, they would prefer a more half-court offense. Still, there will be times when Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire want to push the ball up the court and players like Wallace need to make sure they can catch up.
Even though Wallace is out of his prime, he can still be an effective player for the Knicks. Wallace has the ability to post-up smaller players and can knock down a perimeter jumper when needed.
