Why the Knicks Made the Right Choice With Raymond Felton

The New York Knicks are a franchise that wants to shine under the spotlight and it is always trying to make its way to the back pages of the city’s newspapers. New York City is a place that craves attention, and the city’s main basketball team is no different. The Knicks want to draw audiences for their team and they will do anything to put together a roster worth watching.

No where in the NBA does the spotlight burn more intensely than on the stage of Madison Square Garden, and no one is more painfully aware of that fact than Knicks’ ownership. Over the year James Dolan has made numerous attempts to keep his franchise relevant and watchable. Unfortunately, too many of those decisions have ended in disaster.

However, a young basketball player from Harvard named Jeremy Lin changed the Knicks overnight. Not only did Lin make the Knicks the darlings of the NBA, but he single-handedly revitalized the team in the 2011-12 season. Lin became an international star in a matter of days and the Knicks were the center of the sports world for weeks.

Although Lin’s season came to an end due to injury, he helped raise MSG’s stock to a high and provided fans across the world with a motivational story. Lin was a perfect package for a team like the Knicks; he was easily marketable and once again made the Knicks a team everyone could root for.

Nevertheless, all good things must come to an end and that is exactly what happened with the so-called “Linsanity.” The Knicks did not match the Houston Rockets’ offer sheet for Lin, meaning the promising point guard will be headed to Texas.

Still, Knicks fans should not be upset as the team has added Raymond Felton. Although Felton is not as sexy of a name as Jeremy Lin, the UNC Tar Heel is no doubt the better fit and point guard than the Harvard man.

Felton signed with the New York Knicks in 2010, and he was an original member in the rebirth movement of the franchise. Felton was named co-captain alongside Amar’e Stoudemire and with those two in charge the Knicks were hoping to get back to the post-season. With Mike D’Antoni running the team on the sidelines, the Knicks were lethal in the pick-and-roll, and the team was headed in the right direction.

Felton ran the offense extremely well and he did a great job getting players like Danilo Gallinari and Wilson Chandler involved. The Knicks were fun to watch and the young nucleus of players was developing into a dynamic lineup. Still, despite all the success with Felton at the point, the Knicks ended up trading him.

The front office did not want to give up Felton at first, but he was one of the players the Denver Nuggets really wanted. The Knicks added Felton in the deal reluctantly, and got NBA superstar Carmelo Anthony in exchange.
